Best Answer

Four haploid cells (23 chromosomes, N in humans) from the two haploid cells (23 chromosomes, N * each of the chromosomes consisting of two sister chromatids are produced as a result of meiosis in males and females.

MEIOSIS IN FEMALES

OOGENESIS

Oogenesis refers to the meiotic divisions that produce eggs in females. This occurs in the ovaries.

This process begins before a female is even born! During embryonic development, diploid cells in the ovaries called oogonia divide by mitosis to produce primary oocytes. The primary oocytes are also diploid.

Primary oocytes start meiosis. They complete interphase and prophase I. They are frozen at the end of prophase I and remain this way until the female reaches puberty. A female is born with about 2 million primary oocytes. By the time she reaches puberty, about 400,000 are left (most of them die through the years). This is more than enough!

  • HOW MANY EGGS DOES A FEMALE USE DURING HER LIFETIME?

Suppose a female starts ovulating is 13 and reaches menopause as 53. If she releases one egg per month, that is 12 eggs per year. If she is fertile for 40 years, the 40 X 12 = 580 eggs in her lifetime. This does not take into account that a female will not ovulate the months she is pregnant, and may not ovulate while she is nursing her baby. Thus, 400,000 eggs is plenty!

After puberty, each month one of the primary oocytes is selected for ovulation (release from the ovary). Just prior to ovulation, the primary oocyte is unfrozen and completes meiosis I. The two cells that result from this division are a secondary oocyte and a structure called a polar body. The division of the cytoplasm during meiosis I is uneven. Almost all of the cytoplasm is partioned off to the secondary oocyte (egg). The polar body is very small. It is just a place to put the "extra chromosomes".

Secondary Oocyte and Polar Body

After Meiosis I

If a sperm penetrates the secondary oocyte (egg) after it is released from the ovary, the secondary oocyte will complete meiosis II forming one more polar body and a mature egg. The first polar body formed from meiosis one may also complete meiosis II to form another polar body.

The results of oogenesis are one exceptionally large, haploid egg and three very small polar bodies that serve as disposal sites for the unneeded chromosomes. The chromosomes in the egg will fuse with the chromosomes of a sperm to produce a new organism. The polar bodies all die.
