The original USS Constellation, though not the first ship launched by the Navy (that honor goes the USS United States, launched 4 months prior to the Constellation) was the first Navy vessel to be Commissioned. She was built at Harris Creek Shipyard at Fell's Point in Baltimore.
There is conflicting history concerning the original Constellation and the one now in Baltimore Harbor. It was concluded based on evidence found during her extensive overhaul in the '90's that she was in fact a completely different ship model than the original. However, Naval Records do not show any new appropriations for a new ship, only a notation that the original ship be dismantled and an entirely new one by rebuilt as a new model ship using the original ship materials. If true, it is a new ship, but made from the original ship.
I still remember watching the current Constellation being brought up the harbor from the shipyard to its current spot in Baltimore Harbor after her restoration. It was one of those things in life you don't forget.
