  1. Call for ambulance or shout for help.
  2. Sit or lay him down and make sure he is comfortable.
  3. Loosen tight clothing around neck and/or waist.
  4. If he has medication, advise him to take it (for example GTN spray). Assist him if necessary.
  5. If he doens't have medication, give him 1 aspirin tabletwith water or ask him to slowly chew it.
    1. placing 2 or 3 fingers on his wrist (over the thumb) and apply gentle pressure until you feel a throbbing sensation...this is the pulse.
    2. While looking at clock or watch, count each beat that you feel for 1 minute (or for 30 seconds multiplied by 2).
    3. Take note of pulse rate for ambulance crew.
  6. Record pulse rate. Do this by:
  7. Record breathing rate. Do this by placing your hand on his chest and count each breath (inhale and exhale) for 1 minute and record for ambulance crew. It is advisable to attempt this at the same time as the pulse assessment. Do not tell him what you are checking as you may get incorrect reading.
  8. Continue to monitor until help arrives. Do NOTleave patient.
