Generally, the first treatment for ANY bleeding is direct pressure if possible. Internal bleedings maybe difficult to put pressure, but external bleeds can normally be controlled with direct pressure. In the case of nose bleed, epistaxis, most came from the medial (middle) wall less than 1cm from nasal opening. Press accross the nose from the outside wall for at least 5 min. Cool compress in forehead may help because cold temp causes blood vessels to constrict and blood supply to tip of nose comes from forehead area.

I don't tell people to tilt head back because I'd rather have blood come out the front if it's still bleeding. If you tilt back, blood would just flow to your throat.
