Its official name is the bass viol, although it is seldom referred to as such. It is actually of a different type than the rest of the string instruments (violin, viola, and cello)- it is part of the older group of instruments called viols. The viols were popular during the renaissance, and featured sloped shoulders and different shaped resonance holes (F holes) than the violin family. Viols came in all different sizes, and the smaller ones eventually evolved into the violin family. For some reason, however, the bass never came along with the rest of them, and has remained in the old style.

Another name for the bass is the contrabass.
