A CMOS battery is used as an emergency back-up to keep information you have stored in the phone in memory from being lost if the main rechargable battery runs out of charge. This would include things such as your preferences, contacts, missed/received/dialed calls, downloaded ringtones, etceteras.

CMOS battery helps the CMOS to remember or rather retain the data or information it holds even the computer is off. It maintains the computer setting as accurate as possible.
One good example is the system clock. If you turned off the computer, the system clock will still run, making it accurate the next time you turn on the computer. This is the function of the CMOS battery.
