When someone says they are installing something on their computer, they usually mean they are installing it to their hard drive, which is located inside their computer. In most situations, a hard drive is what loads the operating system so you can use your PC. If it fails, you will not be able to fully boot your PC.

It stores the data on one or more hard spinning disks contained inside the drive. The disks are coated with magnetic material that is altered by magnetic heads that move just above the spinning surface changing polarity to store the data on to the disk in a binary code.
In recent years there have been new innovations is storage technology that have seen what are known as Solid State Drives slowly starting to replace the hard drive in some of the newer top end computers due to the faster data storage and retrieval times.
Over the next few years as Solid State Drive technology improves in storage capacity and becomes cheaper we will eventually see the demise of the hard drive as the worlds primary data storage device.
