Expansion slots on motherboards as the name implies, are there to expand the capabilities and features of a computer. There are lots of different components that can be added through the use of an expansion slot. Some of these components include graphics cards, sound cards, RAID controller cards, and you can even add USB 3.0 support to an older computer that only has USB 2.0 support, thus speeding up data transfers when using a USB 3.0 flash drive or hard drive. The most common component that is usually added through the use of an expansion slot is a graphics card.

(read on if you want to find out why it's a good idea to add a graphics card)

Some motherboards come with built in graphics, others do not. What this means is that unless you install a graphics card you will not be able to see anything on the monitor if your motherboard doesn't come with a built in graphics chip. Also, even if the motherboard does come with built in graphics, adding a graphics card to the motherboard will allow you to play modern Video Games and add productivity if you are involved in video editing. Without a good graphics card it's nearly impossible to play today's modern video games or to do any type of serious video editing.

Which slot is used for 3d graphics video cards?

The now obsolete AGP slot was used solely for video. The current slots used for video, the large x16 PCIe connectors, can also be used for general PCIe expansion cards. Sitting in shelf above my head, I still have some PCI and ISA slot video cards: using a general-purpose expansion slot for video is the standard way, and a dedicated graphics expansion slot was a short-term abberation.
