Network interface card makes provision for a physical link to a computer systems or network. This also allows computers on a network to communicate either with themselves or the server. It stores the MAC address of each computer registered on a network and helps connect a network to outside world.

It belongs to both physical and data link layer of the OSI model. This device provides physical passage to a networking media and provides a low-level addressing system via the use of MAC addresses. It allows users to be connected to others either by using cables or wireless connectivity

All network cards have a unique 48-bit serial number, the MAC address, which is stored in ROM carried on each card. Every computer on an Ethernet network must have a card with a unique MAC address. It is important to know that no two network cards will share the same MAC address, because card vendors purchase sets of addresses from the (IEEE) and assign a unique address to each card during their manufacture.
