A step-down transformer is a reverse-wired step-up transformer. You can take a 110/220 transformer and feed 110 to step up to 220 or feed 220 to step down to 110.

step down transformer is a device which reduces voltage .

The formula for Transformers is: Ns/Np = Vs/Vp, where Ns, Vs are number of turns and voltage in secondary and Np, Vp are in primary. If you want step up transformer, Np > Ns. And if step up transformer, then put Ns > Np.

Step down transformers are used to step down power coming from powerlines and on into your house, work, or school. Powerlines have very high voltages-much higher than what our appliances can use. Step down transformers step power down to a usable voltage. They are also used on electronics. Do you see those power cords with the cube-shaped device on the end? They're used on cell phone chargers, and other appliances. Those are step-down transfomers. Our electronics only take a few volts to operate. So step down is needed here as well. They step down voltage from 120V to just a few volts, or even millivolts.

Step-down transformers are used to reduce the voltage, while at the same time increasing the current, of an incoming AC line.

AC power is stepped-up at the power plant - one example would be from 24 KV to 138 KV - in order to reduce the current carrying requirements of the transmission lines. This reduces the physical size required for those wires.

It is then stepped-down at the substation, to a more locally usable level, such as 13.2 KV, and sent out to the various neighborhoods.

It is then stepped-down again, at the service transition (on the pole or possibly underground or in a transformer vault) to the service level, such as 120/240 split phase, or 480 three phase, or whatever the customer requires.

Within a device, ultimately, there may be yet another step-down within the power supply stage of the device, as needed.

The function of any transformer is to change one AC voltage value to another AC voltage value. A step down transformer will transform a higher AC voltage to a lower AC voltage. A step up transformer will transform a lower AC voltage to a higher AC voltage. The transmission of electrical power uses both of these types of transformers. From the generation station the voltage is stepped up to a very high transmission voltage and at the end of the transmission line it is stepped down to a voltage that consumers can utilize.

The function of a step down transformer performs the opposite of a step-up transformer. A step down transformer is a kind of transformer whose second voltage is less than its primary voltage.

Why are transformers necessary?

Transformers are necessary to stepup or stepdown voltage levels so that transmission of power is convenient. without stepup/stepdown voltage level according to our requirement losses will be very high and transmission and usage of power is not feasible.

How do you step down voltage in transformers?

step up or stepdown is done by the ratio of the number of turns in the primary / secondary coil, large number on high voltage side small number on low voltage side. the wire used on the low voltage side would be thicker than the high.
