The mamillary bodies of the brain are a pair of round parts of the limbic system and considered part of the hypothalamus are responsible for recollective memory and spatial memories and form relays for the amygdalae and hippocampi. Pathology of these bodies can be due to lack of thiamine and my produce amnesia, Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, heart failure and sleep apnea. The EXACT function is still unknown.

hey, along with the anterior and dorsomedial nuclei in the thalamus, are involved with the processing of recognition memory.

They are believed to add the element of smell to memories.
