The primary function of the lungs is respiration. So they enable you to breathe and thus bring oxygen into the body and carry out carbon dioxide. They receive air from the atmosphere through the nose and mouth with every inhale. That oxygen passes through the lining of the lungs and into the capillaries that run next to them. That allows the transfer of the oxygen in the air to pass into the blood stream.

The oxygenated blood travels to the chambers of the heart and then to the rest of the body. The heart then pumps that oxygen in the blood throughout the body to feed and enrich every cell of the body.

Throughout this process, the diaphragm and chest muscles help the expand the lungs which draws fresh air into them, and compresses the lungs to exhaust the used air from them.
