What are the four rules to first aid?

The 4 first aid rules are:-

1. Never needlessly move a victim / patient.

2. Don't apply pressure to cavities.

3. Anything from outside the body that goes into the body, (impalement), stays in.

4. Anything from inside the body that comes out the body, (evisceration), stays out.

The general principals of first aid is to remain calm, keep track of the time, check for breathing and a heartbeat, and use CPR if needed. If there is an open wound, you may want to use an antibacterial ointment. Get medical attention if needed.

The steps for administering first aid can be summarized by the phrase:

Check-Call-Care.

Check: Check the scene and the victim. Do you need to move the victim? Will your involvement help or make things worse?

Call: Always call 9-1-1. The faster EMS can arrive, the better.

Care: Lastly, administer care. Ask the victim for permission to help them. State who you are, your level of training, and how you would like to help. They can deny your help (but if they are unconscious, consent is implied). And remember, depending on the scene, sometimes the best course of action is to take no direct action.
