At age eleven my family and I were subject to a severe gas leak from an old refrigeration unit in our rental home. It was a severe leak and all five people in the home were effected short term by nausea, vomiting, dizziness, inability to walk in a straight line this is due to the fact that the natural gas replaces the oxygen your body needs to function properly. The only long term effect was that I now have migraine headaches still at age 49. From what I have read this seems to be a very rare occurrence as sites state that their are no long term side effects to being exposed to natural gas. It is possible that I was genetically predisposed to have migraines and that the natural gas triggered them in my system but that is just a guess on my part.

Do you have to seek medical attention after exposure to natural gas?

Natural gas is an energy source that is commonly used in homes for cooking, heating, and water heating. It is primarily composed of methane. Exposure to low levels of natural gas is not harmful to your health. However, if a gas leak is severe, the amount of oxygen available for breathing could be dramatically reduced, which can lead to asphyxia. Exposure to extremely high levels of natural gas can cause loss of consciousness or even death. ****An individual exposed to natural gas asphyxia needs to get fresh air immediately and medical attention as soon as possible. If the person is unconscious and not breathing, move him or her to a location where there is fresh air and administer mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until help arrives.***

Environmental effects while obtaining energy sources?

Some of the environmental effects that can occur when obtaining energy sources include spills that leak into other natural resources. If an oil platform explodes, it may leak crude oil into ocean or seawater and kill aquatic animals.

What are the side effects if your car has exhaust leak?

If the exhaust leak is allowing the fumes to come into the passenger compartment of the vehicle then you could very well get carbon monoxide poisoning. Very bad headaches, dizzyness, nausea, apathy, loss of consiousness which will cause an accident, and from prolonged exposure without relief; death. Fix the leak. If it is not coming into the passenger compartment then it will cause excessive noise and probably get you a ticket. Fix the leak.

Can an unburnt gas leak cause ill-health in humans?

Unburnt gas leak is probably referring to natural gas. The gas is mostly methane which is odorless, that's why they add that additional 'rotten-egg' smell to make it noticable. That smell isn't a health concern, though the gas is a hydrocarbon and probably has some health risks if exposed to it for a long period of time.

When a person encounters a natural gas leak they should open the windows and isolate the concern if the leak is faint, but if the odor is strong then you must leave quickly get yourself away from the leak and call the utility company or 911. Calling the utility will also help with a faint gas leak.

Side effects of natural gas on humans?

None, natural gas is not toxicNatural gas is composed primarily of methane. Methane is not toxic (or carcinogenic)and should produce no adverse health effects. However, a sufficient environmental oxygen concentration (approximately 19.5%) must be maintained to prevent asphyxiation. Aside from this, only the flammable and explosive properties of natural gas pose a threat. METHYL MERCAPTAN is the rotten egg smell added to natural gas to help aid in leak detection. This additive can cause sickness and disturbing symptoms. If you believe this then you must still believe in witches. I urge readers to see the HBO documentary, 'GASLAND', to discover the frightening truth. This is another example of the government and big business working together with utter disregard for the health and safety of the public.
