on the Richter scale it can go up to any number because it is a logarithmic scale so their is really no top number to this instrument. each unit of magnitude produces a ten-fold increase. this has been observed in the amplitude of seismic waves.

It is an open ended scale, however it is unlikely there will ever be an earthquake that will exceed magnitude 10.

It's an open scale, it can theoretically go as high as it needs. But as the scale is logarithmic there's probably a limit somewhere as to high it can go before it rips everything apart.

In theory there is no upper limit to the Richter Scale. but if there was a 15,0 earthquake we would die like boom! so it only goes up to 12
