A:The letters attributed to Jude, and those attributed to Peter, have been called the catholic epistles (from katholikos, general), because they are addressed to Christians in general, not to a particular congregation. The author intended the epistle to be read as if written by Jude in the first century, yet he stood with his readers and looked towards the past and told them that they, his readers, "must remember the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ," thereby showing himself to be neither an apostle nor a contemporary or near-contemporary of Jesus. He even went on to say, "For they [the apostles] said to you, 'In the last time there will be scoffers'" (Jude l7‑18). Burton L. Mack (Who Wrote the New Testament) considers this to be simply a matter of sloppy literary production. He says the attribution of a letter to Jude is inexplicable and suggests all the other names must have already been taken.

Jude's emphasis was on the Lord's power and willingness to punish by destruction. The slightly later Second Epistle of Peter copies most of Jude, but some stylistic features temper Jude's rough priggery and the mythology in 2 Peter is not quite as offensive.

To all believers of God warning them vividly of the false teachers which we see many today. Jude does not command us to confront these troublemakers, rather only to avoid them. He gives no plan for disciplinary actions as he simply indicates they are under the condemnation of God.

According to Strong's Lexicon, the name Jude (also Judah, Judas) is Hebrew in origin and means, "he shall be praised."
