Carrots were not invented. Somewhere back in pre-history people found that wild roots were good to eat. As people began to choose the best and biggest roots to propagate, the wild carrot was developed into the carrot we know today.

The wild ancestor of the modern carrot is believed to be from Afghanistan. Over the centuries selective breeding of the naturally occurring subspecies reduces the bitterness and size of the core and increased the carrots sweetness. Originally carrots were grown for their leaves and not the root. The modern carrot was introduced to Europe around the 8-10th centuries. In the 17th century orange carrots appeared for the first time in the Netherlands when previously yellow and purple varieties had been grown.

The origin of Carrots: carrots first arrived in Sweden in the 1840's by a Spanish female settler named Isabel. Some time in May, Isabel was galloping through the forest in search of food. She spotted an unfamiliar animal in the forest. It was a ryiistalo (sadly, extinct) the ryiistalo's fur gives off residue, a sweat-like substance, through which it absorbs into a layer of soil and grows over time. Isabel picked some of the carrots off of a mysterious tree and tried one. she was very pleased with the flavor so she proceeded to eat and eat until there was only one left. She then took the very last carrot off of the tree to preserve in a plastic container full of moldy sour cream. The next morning, Isabel peeked into the container but something terrible had happened! The carrot shrunk. Isabel was very disapointed and sad at that point. she then buried the mini-carrot in the ground in the forest and made it to the funeral. As Isabel cried at the grave every night, her evil step brother, Pepa, danced on the grave of the dried carrot. After about a month or so, there was a plant growing in the spot of the carrots burrial place. Isabel got frustrated that some plant would ever even dare to grow right there. so She went over to pursue the plant. After closer speculation, Isabel discoered that the plant she thought was an evil, cruel weed, was actually the carrots many children. She made a living the rest of her life selling her plentiful harvest of carrots to many different countries. Unfortunatley, Isabel had died of aids before selling them to the Japanese, Korean, Native Americans, and Brazilians, but over time the magical carrot had made it's way to those countries. And that's How the carrot was discovered.

Carrots originated in present-day Afghanistan about 5,000 years ago, probably as a purple or yellow root. They were well-known in ancient Greece and Rome. Orange carrots were thought to be first cultivated in Turkey in the 8th century. In 795 AD, Charlemagne included carrots in the list of plants recommended for cultivation in the Frankish empire of western and central Europe. The Arabs reintroduced carrots to Spain around 1100. Purple, white, and yellow carrots were imported to southern Europe in the 14th century and were widely grown in Europe into the 17th Century. Over the centuries, orange carrots became the preferred variety to grow and eat.
