Health education throughout history had a very close relationship with the sciences. As our knowledge of the sciences improved so did our health education such as education on hygiene and diets. Exercise is also a key component of health education and was it's primary focus for centuries until we learned the value of hygiene and balanced diets.

The history of education (for Americans) started during the colonial days, and started at home when parents taught their children how to write, read, and do basic calculations. Unlike women, boys were taught more academics. Women were taught basic reading, writing, math, and how to run a house. In 1840 Massachusetts and Connecticut wanted state- funding schools. In 1852 Massachusetts passed the first bill making it mandatory that all children attend elementary school. By 1918 every state in the Union had a law that all children must attend school. Private schools, however, started in 1925 when Catholics did not agree with sending their children to public schooling.
