The first pieces of jewellery were made from natural materials such as bone,shells,animal tusks or teeth,wood and carved stone. Jewellery was usually made for people of high standing in the tribe or community, to show their importance. Many items of jewellery such as brooches or buckles have origins as practicle items-eg pinning clothes or fabric together.
