The coldest town in Australia depends on how you define "town". The coldest place in Australia is the ski resort at Charlotte Pass in the Australian Alps, with an extreme of -23°C recorded. However, the coldest actual town in Australia is Collinsville in Tasmania, with a maximum mean temperature of 7.5 degrees Celsius.

Darwin, capital of the Northern Territory, experiences the most general warm and humid temperatures all year around, averaging in the high 20s and low 30s (Celsius).

However, it must be said that both Adelaide (South Australia) and Melbourne (Victoria) are the cities which experience the most extreme heat in summer. Both cities are in major bushfire-prone regions, and both cities can experience summer heatwaves where the temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

Melbourne's highest temperatures have reached 43.7 in December, 45.6 in January and 46.4 in February. Adelaide's extremes have reached 43 degrees in November, 45.7 degrees in January and 44.3 degrees in February. Both Adelaide and Melbourne have been known to regulaly exceed 40 degrees any time from November through to March. According to weather records, however, Darwin has never officially reached 40 degrees.

Cloncurry, in the state's northwest, would be the hottest town in Queensland. It is here that Australia's unofficial hottest temperature of 53.1 °C (127.5 °F) was recorded on 16 January 1889. It had to be removed from the official records because it was measured using unsuitable equipment (that is, not in a Stevenson screen, which only became widespread in Australian usage after about 1910).
