Does the worker actually paint, or do they do prep work, like masking and taping, and dropclothes? Is there a lot of housepainting going on in this area right now, or is there very little work? Most housepainters bid a job at a total cost, including labor and materials. If you are working for such a person, your rate is what he says it is. Otherwise, you will blow up his budget for the job. If he wants you on the next job, you can ask for a raise.

In PA an experienced painter, who has been in the business for 35 years, has impeccable record for quality service and commitment? $30.00 and hour. Living in the most expensive area of PA. Chester County. Does anyone think this is low,reasonable or overpriced?

It sounds low if the painter is working legally. Keep in mind the painter has to pay income taxes, the full amount of social security taxes, Worker's compensation insurance, liability insurance along with licensing fees. In addition, not all his hours are billable since he doesn't get paid to market his business, give estimates, pickup paint at the paint store or any other activities that are not putting paint on a surface.

After all that is taken care of, the painter is lucky if that $30.00 nets him $15 an hour which isn't much more than the starting pay for an experienced painter.

If the painter isn't working legally and doesn't have insurance, it doesn't matter how little he charges, because one fall off a ladder and you've lost your house to his medical bills.
