Bell Aircraft helped create the WWII air-force of America, defeating the power of the Japanese zeroes. It not only aided greatly in WW2, but also boosted the US's economy.
Actually the above answer is quite incorrect. Bell's main product in WW2 was the P-39 which was not a notable success. The RAF cancelled their orders for it after it proved to be unable to fly faster than the Hurricane, and the USAAF in fact noted it was "not fit for combat against Japanese fighters" and used them for ground -attack and photo duties.
Bell's real importance came later, when they concentrated on experimental rocket aircraft and helicopters. The X-1 and its successors were very important for NASA and development of high speed flight in general. . During this period after WW2 Bell developed many helicopters including the UH-1 Iroquois, - the 'Huey' which was certainly the most famous and popular helicopter of the 60's and 70's.
