The importance of it was because it was a way to bar unwanted ethnicities from entering the United States by setting lower quotas. The act stated that the Immigration level would be decreased by limited the annual number of immigrants who could be admitted from any country to 2% of the number of people from that country who were already living in the United States in 1890. The date they added is increasingly important because the Chinese Exclusion Act was set into place in 1882 so it specifically targeted Asians from entering the United States.

It limited the number of immigrants who could be admitted from any country. It completely changed the patterns of immigration throughout the twentieth century. This piece of legislation lead to end of mass migration. There were other contributing factors which helped to stem the tide of mass migration such as the great depression.
