Military discipline is a state of order and obedience existing within a command. Discipline helps to complete certain jobs/instructions efficiently and correctly. in the military it is used to train people so that they are good at their job/career as they have improved due to discipline.
In order for an army to function in the proper manner, its operations must be tied to discipline. For casual students of ancient Rome, one of its keys to centuries of victories was based in part by discipline. This entailed constant maneuvers of its legions whether they were at war or not. This meant an order of command that everyone recognized. From foot soldier to Legion leader, the line of command was made known all the time. Even in peace, legions walked for miles with backpacks and each night, a normal routine to build a fortified camp ground was done in a professional manner.
The are of discipline was not only a "Roman thing" All armies in the ancient past to the current day operate efficiently if they are disciplined.
Discipline is very, very important, it shapes you in many ways for work and in life as well.

I would say no, but I am generally anti-union, and I think armed forces would be the very last thing I would want to see unionized. If there are any good arguments for unionization of armed forces I would like to hear them. By good I mean reasons why it would make the armed forces more effective, and not reasons why it would improve the lot of armed forces members. The armed forces of the Netherlands are unionized, and they are effective, but there must be some problems involved with unionization. I am generally pro-union, but I would have to say that a unionized armed services would be a horrible idea. The goals of a union clash directly with those of a national armed service, and I can't see how this would be a good idea for any country.
