Over the counter medication allows people to freely acquire medications that they may need without having to wait for a prescription. Now, you definitely can't go to a pharmacy and get over the counter Vicodin, which is a very strong pain killer, but if you need some Aspirin or Tylenol, you can easily pick it up over the counter.
Any medication you cannot acquire freely, over the counter, such as Vicodin, is known as under the counter.

∙ 10y agoover-the-counter (or OTC) drugs are medication that doesn't need a prescription (so that are not "behind the pharmacist counter")
You can find OTC drugs on the shelf and buy them directly (i.e. Tylenol, Advil, cold syrup, natural products, Tums, Zantac, stomach medicines, etc, etc)
