According to Art experts, impressionism is a style of spot-painting that shows a variety of bright colors to reflect patterns of light in persons and objects within. The emphasis of this art style is how natural light is captured and portrayed in the art piece, and the meaning is how one feels upon viewing such painting.

An impressionistic description is a literary description, for example in a novel or in a prose poem, using optical and artistical principles as the impressionist painters (as Degas, Monet, Pissaro, Renoir and others) did on their paintings, but with the means of language and using the reader's imagination. Marvellous examples for Impressionism in Description are the landscapes and marines in Marcel Proust's "Remembrance of things past", specially the parts of the sojourn in Balbec, in the second book. For further information see the German book by Monika Mayr, Ut pictura descriptio. Poetik und Praxis künstlerischer Beschreibung bei Flaubert, Proust, Belyj, Simon, where different times and streams of literary description are studied and where general principles about literary/artistic description are found and formulated.
