Usually water and Isopropyl Alcohol and sometimes some aromatic fragrances. Isopropyl alcohol is made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen (C3H7OH), which makes it an organic compound. Isopropyl alcohol comes from wood grain. Rubbing alcohol is typically 70% isopropanol and 30% water. Isopropanol is propane (C3H8) with one of the middle hydrogens knocked off and replaced with a hydroxyl (OH). The formula for isopropanol is C3H8O, or writing the formula to show how the atoms are connected, it would be (CH3)2CH-OH Should be nothing more than isopropyl alcohol and perhaps some water. Some preparations also add some food coloring (green, usually), so it doesn't look like water.

Rubbing alcohol is a liquid used topically for disinfection or to soothe, cool, or warm the skin. It is made from 70 to 95% ethanol, or ethyl alcohol, along with water, acetone, methyl isobutyl ketone, and additives to give it a bitter taste. Some products include perfumes or artificial coloring.

A type of denatured alcohol, it has been rendered unfit for human consumption by the addition of poisons and bitter-tasting ingredients. Denaturing allows an alcohol product to be sold without the taxes placed on drinking alcohol, so that it can be used for its other benefits. Alcohol in this form can cause permanent injury or death if consumed.

In addition to the standard version, isopropyl rubbing alcohol, which consists mainly of isopropyl alcohol or isopropanol, is also available. the two should not be confused, however, as isopropyl alcohol is mainly used as a solvent or cleaner, rather than for therapeutic uses.

In the US, a product sold as "rubbing alcohol" will nearly always be a mix of roughly 70% 2-propanol and 30% water. (Isopropyl alcohol and isopropanol are synonyms for 2-propanol.)

In some other countries, "rubbing alcohol" may contain predominantly ethanol, but generally it will be "denatured" ... that is, foul-tasting or possibly even poisonous substances will be added to make it unfit for drinking. In the US, products such as this are generally sold under the name "denatured alcohol", and will probably also list a code such as SD40. These codes refer to specific official recipes that the government has approved of for making ethanol undrinkable; you can refer to the Code of Federal Regulations Part 21 Subpart D if you wanted the details.
