The ICDL is the international version of the ECDL (European computer driving licence).

The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is a relevant and internationally recognised qualification for computer users.

It has 7 modules in the core version as follows:

  1. Concepts of IT
  2. Using the computer and managing files
  3. Word Processing
  4. Spreadsheets
  5. Databases
  6. Presentations
  7. Web Browsing and Communication

ECDL improves your understanding and efficient use of computers. The course opens up a variety of opportunities through the broad range of skills it provides.

The qualification is widely recognised by employers as proof of ability and competence when working with IT.

ECDL offers flexible courses and patterns of study, and is designed for novice and intermediate computer users. A downloadable syllabus is available for each of the ECDL courses. By looking at these in relation to your current experience and skill levels, you should be able to determine which is right for you.

No prior knowledge of IT or skill in computing is needed to study ECDL; it is designed for people wishing to gain a benchmark qualification in computing to enhance their career prospects or for personal development.

717 ECDL completers were surveyed in Spring 2009; of these, 98% said they would recommend ECDL to friends and family.

The skills gained over the course of the qualification will not only improve your career options, but take the frustration out of using your computer on an everyday basis by boosting both your efficiency and your confidence.

ECDL is split into three levels: ECDL Essentials, ECDL Extra and ECDL Advanced.

ECDL is split into three levels: ECDL Essentials, ECDL Extra and ECDL Advanced. Also available is ECDL CAD (Computer Aided Design). This qualification focuses on 2D Computer Aided Design.

The qualification that is right for you will depend on your current skills and experience, as well as on what you want from your qualification.

It is also particularly suited to those who require the utmost flexibility in their learning programme, perhaps due to personal or career commitments.

ECDL is designed for novice or intermediate users. It assumes no prior expertise, and offers a flexible working programme.

The basic ECDL qualification is broken down into two levels: ECDL Essentials and ECDL Extra. These can be taken individually to obtain single certificates, or together to achieve the overall ECDL qualification.

ECDL Essentials is a Level 1 ITQ Award and consists of 3 modules. ECDL Extra is a Level 2 ITQ Certificate and consists of 4 modules. As the qualifications map to the ITQ standards they are eligible for funding in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

ECDL is also available as a single qualification comprising seven modules which is eligible for funding in Scotland.
