The devilfish is clearly a squid because squid don't stay close to the bottom of the ocean or sea like octopi. In the book it says "Arms are as long as a man and could easily wrap around you." Squids wrap around ships and their prey. Squids are quicker than octopi and in the book it said "very quickly the devilfish left the black cloud of liquid." Squid have more tentacles than octopi and their eyes bulge out like it says in the book. Last, the head of an squid is smaller than and octopus head. In the book it stated "It had a small head." So the devilfish in the Island of The Blue Dolphin is a SQUID!
In "Island of the Blue Dolphins" by Scott O'Dell, the devilfish is described as a large and menacing sea creature that terrorizes the characters on the island. It is depicted as having long tentacles and a dark, ominous appearance, creating fear and danger for the characters.
Devilfish have long arms

In "Island of the Blue Dolphins," the phrase "the huts looked like ghosts" describes the abandoned and eerie appearance of the village left behind by members of the Ghalas-at tribe, who were forcibly removed from the island. The huts are weather-beaten, empty, and give off a haunting atmosphere, symbolizing the loss and isolation experienced by the main character, Karana, who is left alone on the island.
Island of the Blue Dolphins- a sort of female Robinson Crusoe, was written by one Scott O"Dell ( a male writer). do not confuse with Dolphin Island, a science fiction novel by Arthur C. Clarke. Dolphins also figured in the aquatic-Tarzan like character Dolphin Man in the late sixties- these are one-handers not for kids!
In "Island of the Blue Dolphins", Magat is the son of Nanko, one of Karana's tribe members who dies in a battle with the Aleuts. Magat plays a minor role in the story and is portrayed as a loyal and brave member of the tribe.
My favorite part in Island of the Blue Dolphins is when Karana befriends the wild dog, Rontu, showing her ability to find companionship and connection even in her solitude on the island. This bond symbolizes her resilience and strength as she navigates life alone in the face of challenges.
She does because she has no one else to talk to. I'm sure you would if you were alone on an island with only a dog to talk to.
