Massage therapists can work in a variety of settings. It is the fastest growing Allied Health profession in the US. Massage therapists can work in chiropractor offices, day spas, health resorts, cruise ships, hospitals, doctor's offices, with sports teams, corporate offices doing onsite seated massage, with physical therapists. The list is endless, as so is the list of potential clients since massage has come into the mainstream of public health. More appointments have been made for massages than visits to primary care physicians, family doctors, for the past two years in a row.

There are many places where massage therapists might work. You might work at a massage parlor, fitness center, physical therapy office, spa, resort or at your own private office. Some massage therapists also have mobile businesses, meaning they travel to their clients' homes and offices to give massages there.

The field of Massage Therapy has really opened up and there are many avenues available. You can work in the spa industry for local spas, hotels, resorts, cruise ships, or work out of your home (check local zoning laws for home businesses). You can work in the medical field as a Medical Massage Therapist in a hospital, doctor's office, chiropractor's office, wellness center. The field of infant massage is growing and you can both teach parents how to massage infants (both healthy babies at home and preemies in a hospital). You can become certified in many areas including reflexology, deep tissue, myofascial release, etc. You can work for sports teams, dance troupes, theater groups, etc. Teaching is a great field to supplement your income. As the demand for Massage Therapists increases, so will the schools and there are opportunities to teach massage therapy or lecture at these institutions. You can also work at health clubs, gyms, yoga studios. Many massage therapists have several skills and it is best to diversify as much as possible to keep it interesting and make you more valuable. Getting certified in fields such as energy work, ergonomics, Reiki, etc. makes you more marketable.

Most massage therapists actually start their own business

because you can make more but there are more jobs becoming available. The only thing is that massage schools don't tell you that the entry level jobs start at only $15 an hour and you only get paid that if you have a client. If you don't have a client you only get paid minimum wage or possibly nothing at all. You can only work about 25 hours a week max because of the physical demands so you can't make a living on such low wages. You can find or create higher paying jobs if you have the confidence to make it happen for yourself.
