A butler (or house manager) is a paid servant, typically live-in, that oversees the other staff of a house. Typical duties include answering the residence phone and door calls, budgets and supplies, overseeing duties and schedules of other household staff such as maids and cooks, assisting with security, packing and travel planning, meal and drink service, and light housekeeping duties. Typically, a butler is also expected to fill in for sick or absent staff members, performing most other chores. A very versatile position indeed.
