In simplest terms; It protects the cell and draws in nutrients to keep the cell healthy. The cell membrane also keeps out certain chemicals, for instance sodium, and keeps certain chemicals inside the cell like potassium. It can be harmed by disease or invading phenomena.

The cell membrane is a semi-permeable membrane that surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell, enclosing its contents. Its function is to allow certain substances into the cell, while keeping other substances out. It also serves to help support the cell and maintain its shape.

Cell membrane is the living outermost component of cell. It helps in protecting cell from mechanical shocks and also provide a confined shape and structure to the cell. The main role of cell membrane is either to check the in and out movement of compounds to the cell, as it work as semipermeable membrane which allows the specific compounds or elements into and out of the cell.

The cell membrane maintain the shape of a cells...but this is not it's major function. A cell membrane protects the interior contents present in the cell from spilling out into the external environment. It also protects the cell from harmful substances present in the external environment from entering into the cell. Amoeba forms different shapes while feeding, and without a cell membrane it would become clumsy like a fluid. Cell membranes maintain shape, rigidity and also protect the cell, thereby helping it in its survival.
