Despite anecdotal records to the contrary, the longest VERIFIED record for an American alligator is just over 14.5 feet (almost 4.5 meters) in length. Nothing larger has ever been measured. There is a common myth circulating (even on television occasionally) that a 19 foot alligator was measured...these are false. The record in question is nothing more than an anecdotal remark from the 19th Century. To put it simply- the existence of a 19 foot alligator is as likely as the existence of a 30 foot crocodile (in other words, it's fantasy.) It is feasible to assume that the American alligator's maximum adult length is just over 15 feet.
