Whether you measure from the ocean floor or only the portion above sea level, Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii is the most voluminous volcano on earth. About 9,000 km3 (cubic kilometers) of lava are above sea level and over 50,000 km3 of lava rise from the ocean floor to the summit. Only the other Hawaii volcanoes come close to these numbers. Not counting Hawaii, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Mount Cameroon are two of the largest by volume.

The mid-ocean-ridges are the longest active chain of volcanoes on Earth. However the largest structure related to volcanism is currently thought to be the Ontong Java-Manihiki-Hikurangi Plateau in the Southwest Pacific Ocean which was formed as a result of volcanism around 121 million years ago.

This volcanism was related to the "Louisville hotspot" (thought to have been caused by a mantle plume) and is one of a group of large scale long term volcanic events known as Large Igneous Provinces.

Estimates of the total volume of lava erupted range from 59-77 million cubic kilometres with some estimates reaching as high as 100 million km3.
