Answer

In my opinion a 10 yr. old shouldn't be left at home alone in Georgia, or any other state. That is just too young. I think that they are not old enough to handle an emergency should it come along. I would not be comfortable with it.

Answer

The Georgia.gov link below gives guidelines for when children can be left alone.

Answer

Georgia has no specific laws regarding the age a child must be to be left alone. Actually, Georgia was the last state in the union to pass a child endangerment statue. Even so, parents or caregivers can only be held accountable if they leave their child or children alone and a harmful situation occurs. The parents or caregiver can then be held responsible if it can be proved they were "reckless and negligent" in their responsibility for the care of the minor children.

Answer

Georgia's Guidelines for leaving a child without adult supervision: * Children under 8 years old should never be left alone, even for short periods of time. * Children between the ages of 9 and 12, based on level of maturity, can be left home alone for brief periods of time. * Children 13 and older can generally be left as babysitters, with the exception of children in foster care. It is not recommended, however, that 13 year olds baby sit infants, small children and children that require special attention due to medical conditions. * Children 15 and older can be left home alone overnight, depending on the level of maturity of the child. == ==

There appears to be no legislation in Georgia for this, I would say from other laws, that it is about 12-14 years old. But if in doubt ask your local police station or a teacher at a school! It is presumed that the parents will use good judgment in deciding if their child or children are mature enough to be left without adult supervision.

Bear in mind, that does not relieve the parents of their responsibility if problems arise.

Nor does it mean that authorities would not be able to take action against the parents depending upon the circumstances.

That being the case, parents should not leave a child alone who is not capable of preparing a simple meal, has not been completely informed of safety issues (don't open the door to strangers, etc.), is not capable of obtaining help in case of an emergency, and so forth

Legal AgeThere are very few states in the U.S. with legal minimum ages for children home alone, but many state agencies have published guidelines. Georgia, Illiniois, Maryland and Oregon are a few of the states with specific ages mentioned in their laws.

"Georgia law makes it pretty clear. Between the ages of 9 and 12, you can leave a child alone for up to two hours. Age 12 and up, no more than 12 hours at a time."

- NBC Augusta.com

12 years of age appears to be the most common recommendation. Below in Related Links is an article entitled Home Alone Children Legal Age Limits which provides a state by state comparison with references.

One guideline from a California child welfare representative suggests that 8 year olds and over can be left at home for a brief period of time (usually just after school).

It depends. There are a few questions you must ask yourself before you decide to do this.

1. Is your child responsible enough to do this?

2. Would your child answer/ talk to any stranger who came to the door?

3. Is your child comfortable with this?

4. Are you comfortable with this?

5. Do you know most of your neighbors close up? If so do you trust them?

6. Would anyone know your child was home alone?

If ANY of your answers to these questions no, do NOT do this.
