There is no legal age in order to babysit in Florida, but you should be mature, responsible and it doesn't hurt if you take a first-aid, CPR or childcare course. (You can make more money that way.) trying to find out if my 13 year old would be allowed to babysit my 9 yaer old legally with no reprecutions?

12 and up preferably and they don't ask you things like "Did you leave food and an emergency number", anything over 12 and they say nothing...

Hi I just got a hold of family services and a lawyer to find the answer to the legal babysitting age... I was told 16 years of age is the legal age to allow a teenager to babysit... Personally I think 13 or 14 years should be the age allowed as long as the maturity level is acceptable. Just thought I would share...

AnswerThe generally accepted minimum age is twelve (12) with thirteen or above being preferable. However, there does not appear to be an express legal age requirement for babysitting. Some (outdated) legal opinions and the labor laws indicate that a child younger than 12 may baby sit. Special rules and limitations do apply to persons babysitting foster children. The parent(s) may be held responsible for events that occur even in their absence (negligence, reckless behaviour causing damage to others, child endangerment, etc.), so that possibility should be considered when chosing a responsible sitter. Consider the following:

Twelve is the minimum age that minors may be:• Issued a Permit to Work by school authorities [EC 49111]. • Employed in household occupations or as a personal attendant if issued a Permit to Work [EC 49111]. This should not be construed to apply to irregular employment as a babysitter or other personal attendant duties or to irregular yard or housework since those occupations, when pursued on a casual, irregular basis, are considered exempt from permit requirements [18 Ops. Cal. Atty. Gen. 114 (1951)]. Since most domestic service is not considered part of the child labor provisions of the FLSA, the federal minimum age of 14 for permitted occupations does not apply to domestic service [29 CFR 552.108]. (See Chapter 7 of this Digest.) • Employed or permitted to work in or in connection with the occupation of selling or distributing newspapers, magazines, periodicals, or circulars [LC 1298]. Newscarriers are exempt from the FLSA [29 USC 213].

Under Twelve

Minors under 12 may perform irregular odd jobs in private households performing such duties as baby-sitting [18 Ops. Cal. Atty. Gen. 114, (1951)]. Great caution should be exercised in following this outdated legal opinion.
