A "year".

Orbital period.

The time differs for each of the planets, those close to the Sun orbit at a faster rate (angular velocity) than those further out so their "years" are shorter.

That depends on how far the planet is from the sun. The farther out it is, the longer it takes to complete an orbit. Mercury, the innermost planet, takes about 88 days to orbit the sun. Neptune, the outermost planet, takes 165 years.

The length of time it takes for a body to orbit its sun is called a year.
The length of year will vary depending on the distance the body is from the sun and the mass of the body and sun.

It depends on how far from it you are. If you're at the distance from it that Earth is, then it's just slightly under 365 and a quarter days. If you're at the distance from it that Mars is, it's more like 687 days.

Very roughly, for a circular orbit the square root of (0.0395 * ^3) gives you the length of the year in days (for our Sun ... the formula also depends on the mass of the sun and, technically, the mass of the planet, thought the mass of any planet in our solar system is so small compared to the mass of the Sun that it's negligible). I just checked that for Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, and in every case the number of days given by the formula was within 1% of the actual value, so it looks like I didn't mess up on the math when calculating it. Because the planets' orbits aren't completely circular, for "radius" you need to use what's called the "semi-major axis".

True or false the length of a planet's year increases as its distance from the sun increases?

True. The length of time that it takes to complete one orbit around the Sun is directly related to the distance of the orbit from the Sun.

What is one orbit of the sun by a planet is called?

A year. Each planet in a solar system has a year of different length, equal to the time it takes for one complete orbit around its sun.

Why is 1 year on earth 365 days and on mercury 1 year is 88 days?

A year is the time it takes to orbit the Sun. Mercury is nearer to the Sun, so it takes it less time to to make one complete orbit of the Sun. Earth takes just over 365 days to orbit the Sun so that is the length of a year on Earth. The year of all the planets are different lengths.A year is the time it takes to orbit the Sun.
