I am a court reporting student almost ready to graduate :) The length of time it takes to become a stenographer completely depends on the student. The average length of time is 2 1/2 years at a technical school. It takes a lot of training and a lot of practice, but the rewards are more than worth the time. You have to take courses in English, Legal Terminology and Medical Terminology. You will also, depending on the school, learn CAT software used by many Court Reporters. This is a learned physical and mental skills, mostly made up of muscle memory. This skill will become second nature to you once mastered. Some students move very quickly while some take a little longer. Some students will get "stuck" at a certain level, while others will glide through the program. It usually just depends on how much time and effort you put into it. You will not be able to pass with anything less than 96% acuracy on any speed test. After all, you will be responsible for the acurate record of depositions, court proceedings, grand jury proceedings, captioning (TV, Conventions, Churches, etc.)
