A bacteria is a few microns, or a few micrometers in length. A micron or micrometer is 1 x 10-6 meters in length. E. coliis about 8 microns in length. Links are provided to relevant Wikipedia articles. The smallest bacteria are of cocci: DIALISTER OR MICROCOCCUS 0.5 to 3.5 micrometer, and the largest bacteria is spirillum that is of 15-22 micrometer.

Type of microbes, environment, nutrient sources etc. are the factors that may affect the life span of microbes.

It can not be clearly answered until the type of microbe is mentioned.

For example, a bacteria xx million age was found in Antarctica, as freezed, 2-3 years ago. And it turned to alive when temperature raised normal levels, in lab conditions.

I think we have validated fossils dating back 3.5 billion years for such microorganisms that either were archaebacteria or a precursor species.
