It is when you walk outside holding a Golf club or other metal object during a thunderstorm. Place the handle end of the golf cloub into the ground away from trees and your house. Move at least twenty feet away and watch.
P.S. for a more exciting experiment hold the golf club in your hand.
P.S.S Just joking about the P.S.
they work by getting lightning to zap them

A lightning rod (US, AUS) or lightning conductor(UK) is a metal rod or metallic object mounted on top of a building, electrically bonded using a wire or electrical conductor to interface with ground or "earth" through an electrode, engineered to protect the building in the event oflightning strike. If lightning hits the building it will preferentially strike the rod and be conducted to ground through the wire, instead of passing through the building, where it could start a fire or cause electrocution.A lightning rod is a single component in a lightning protection system. Lightning rods are also called finials, air terminals or strike termination devices. The lighting rod requires a connection to earth to perform its protective function. Lightning rods come in many different forms, including hollow, solid, pointed, rounded, flat strips or even bristle brush-like. The main attribute of all lightning rods is they are conductive.
He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer, and the glass 'armonica'.
it was made so that there is an easier way for the lightning to reach the ground. If it wasn't invented, the lighting could hit people as an easier way down or cars, buildings e.t.c
Benjamin Franklin was president from 1785 to 1788. Benjamin Franklin invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a catheter, and a glass harmonica.
Benjamin Franklin invented the lightning rod.
He wanted to see if lightning and electricity were the same.
Ben Franklin created The Lightning Rod after his other kite-in-a-lightning-storm experiment.
His kite-in-a-lightning-storm experiment, and most likely after witnessing what happens to buildings that are struck by lightning.

A lightning rod is designed to attract and divert a lightning bolt and has no power of its own
hold a lightning rod up to the sky while lightning is striking
I do not think you would need to insure an lightning rod.
The ground
The lightning rod enabled people to have a system that prevented their house from being struck by lightning. It is a metal rod that prevented lightning from striking. Instead of striking the target it bounced off the rod and into the ground.
One inventor of the lightning rod was Benjamin Franklin. Another was a German priest, Diwisch. Both appear to have made their inventions in the same decade, around 1753. See "Who Really Invented The Lightning Rod?", The Electrical Review, volume 32, 10Feb1893, p.146.
Lightning arrester or lightning rod is a rod paired with a conductor. The lightning arrester was invented by Benjamin Franklin in the late 1749.
