The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary association of 53 independent sovereign states, most of them are former British colonies, or dependencies of these colonies.

The Commonwealth was first officially formed in 1931 when the Statute of Westminster gave legal recognition to the independence of dominions.

The current 53 members of the commonwealth are:

In addition for the Commonwealth Games some countries compete as separate nations, for example United Kingdon competes as England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey. This brings the total number of nations competing at the Commonwealth Games to 71 currently.
