Lobsters are found in all oceans, on the sea bed of rock, sand or mud, from the shoreline out to beyond the continental shelf. They usually live alone and hide in crags or burrow under rocks. Baby lobsters (larvae) float around near the ocean surface and eat plankton, as they grow, after several life stages they begin to resemble adult lobsters and sink to the ocean floor.

The geographic domain of lobsters if you were to look on a map would seem to be concentrated on North America through Central down to northern South America, in the Mediterranean and Western Europe up to the North Sea, from the northern top of west Africa up to southern Scandanavia; also the southern tip of Africa, the Red Sea and Indian ocean off the west coast of India, the coasts of New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia and up to southern China, the southeast coast of Japan and large populations in the central to south Pacific.
