Sedation and hypnosis are the principal side effects of phenobarbital. Central nervous system effects like dizziness, nystagmus (involuntary eye movement) and ataxia (unsteady and clumsy motion of the limbs and torso) are also common. In elderly patients, it may cause excitement and confusion while in children, it may result in paradoxical hyperactivity.1

The most common side effects are drowsiness, light-headedness, dizziness, and unsteadiness. Less common are muscle or joint pain, chest pain, breathing difficulties, rashes and other skin problems. Interestingly, after you stop taking a barbiturate, side effects can continue and new ones can develop; these can include anxiety, vision problems, hallucinations, and seizures.
Common side effects include drowsiness, headache , dizziness, depression , stomachache, and vomiting. More severe side effects include nightmares, constipation, and pain in muscles and joints.
Literature reports just a few side effects such as increased sleepiness. However some reports mention withdrawal symptoms, resulting in nervousness, insomnia and shakyness. Phenibut must not be mixed with alcohol, sedatives or prescription medication.

Alcohol may reduce the effects of phenytoin (Dilantin) by causing it to be excreted more rapidly. Since phenytoin is an anticonvulsant, and since chronic alcohol use often causes convulsions when the alcohol is withdrawn, there could theoretically be an increased danger of convulsions, especially during detox. You should discuss this issue with your doctor, who may feel it necessary to adjust dosages accordingly.
