While June 21or 22 is called the summer solstice and longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, it is called the winter solstice and shortest day in the Southern Hemisphere.

Consequently the Southern Hemisphere is nearer to the sun in December, and the season is called summer or summer time, with longer hours of sun than winter time, and with barbecues and bikinis on the beach on Christmas Day.
