The word Mafia was originally created by the FBI to categorize the Italian American Mob who specialized in organized crimes. Now the term is used for every nationality that has dealings with organized crime (IE Russian mafia, German mafia, etc.) The Mafias true name is Cosa Nostra (Italian for "Our Thing") and then to sound better FBI threw a "La" in front so it became the La Cosa Nostra
