Morocco's history can be well-understood as the consistent struggle for power between the sedentary civilizations along the Mediterranean and Atlantic Coastlines and the nomads and pastoralists in the Atlas Mountains. The nomads and pastoralists have consistently been called the Amazigh or Berber peoples. The sedentary civilizations have changed over time from Carthaginians to Romans, to Arabs (currently).
