The ghosts teach him a lesson and he learns to seize the day and help people less fortunate than himself.
Dickens was appalled at the poverty he saw around him in London and so wished to open the eyes of the middle and upper classes who read his literature - he knew he could reach many as his work was often serialised in newspapers.
Oh, and he knew poverty first hand as his father was imprisoned for debt and so Dickens worked from a young age
