Meaning:
They live far away - probably on different continents, which is driving him mad. They speak on the phone but he still misses her.
If they hardly see each other how can they stay together forever.
BUT He'll be waiting for her no matter what.
He took the times they had together for granted and the memories are strong but they are apart and he misses her like crazy.
Looks like the romance doesn't stand a chance (because they are so far away) but he's willing to take that chance if he can be with her in the end.

Richard Marx wrote it on the road as a love letter to his wife, actress Cynthia Rhodes, who was in South Africa shooting a film. He simply made the song more commercial by making the lyrics seem like it was referring to a doomed relationship.MP
