Flushing dairy cows happens after the cows has calved. It basically involves using saline solution to clean out the cow's uterus. Doing this helps to prevent a uterine infection and increases the possibility that the cow will breed back immediately.

Although expensive, cows that are "flushed" are usually from a long line of excellent genetics, are high producers, and have great fat and protein production.

Super ovulation is done by injecting a gonadotropin, follicle stimulating hormone between the 9th and 14th day of estrous, and is continued twice a day for 4-5 days. This results in the development of numerous follicles. After 2-3 days of this treatment, the animal is then given an injection of prostaglandin and is observed for a standing heat. Once this heat is observed the animal is then bred, in many cases by artificial insemination. After 6-8 days the embryos are then "flushed" from the uterus using saline solution. The embryos will then fall to the bottom and will be graded on a 1-4 scale, 1 being the most viable, and 4 being the least. Normally 1 and 2 graded embryos are used.

These embryos are then frozen to be sold, or will be implanted into synchronized animals, most often heifers as they have a higher chance of getting pregnant from embryo transfer.
