This poem speaks about how the poet, Lord Byron, used to go and have fun with his friends in carnivals at night. He used to go almost everyday at night just to drink, dance, have fun and stay late with girls.
He used to go partying everyday and he got to the point where he could not go anymore because he completely messed up his body because of how much he drank, had fun sexually and his lack of having rests.
He wrote this poem to his friend Moore when he realized that he cannot keep up with the parties because his body could not bare it, even though he really wanted to go and to tell his friend that they both should stop going to parties more often.

He wrote this poem to his friend when he realized that he couldn't keep up this night time life of parties and fun anymore, he really wanted to continue but he needed to tell his friend that they both should calm down and stop their night life as he didn't have the energy any longer to enjoy this life. He reflects on his 'passing youth' and how the night is the time for love.
The sword = represents his spirit
The sheath = represents his body
His body is tired and 'worn out' whereas his spirit is still young and wants to party.
Comparing his spirit to a sword shows his fighting spirit and shows that he wanted to live his life to a full
He took inspiration from the ironic Scottish song 'The Jolly Beggar' (we'll go no more a-roving)
